On the night of this last Thursday (13), São Paulo beat Palmeiras 2-1, at the turn and at the rival’s home, and qualified for the semifinal stage of the 2023 Copa do Brasil, adding 3 to 1 in the aggregate of the two matches – at Morumbi, Tricolor had already won by 1-0.

The result marked the 16th elimination of the Parque Antarctica team against São Paulo in elimination games – popularly known as ‘mata-mata’ – throughout history.

The opponent, in turn, in this criterion, has only five victories against the tricolors.

But what “kills” were these? Why, exactly, 16 to 5?

This count only takes into account qualifying disputes of official competitions (i.e. tournaments organized by competent federations – FPF, CBF, Conmebol), excluding friendly competitions organized by clubs or third parties.

And, in the same way that only official competitions take part, only official games are counted: that is, games with the regular time of dispute of each season, rules of dispute of FIFA, etc. Thus, for example, the Torneio Inicial – an exhibition competition held entirely in one day and with matches of 20 x 20 minutes, or less – even if organized by the FPF, is not valid.

Based on these criteria, this is the list of elimination games that have taken place between São Paulo and Palmeiras since 1930 – the year Tricolor was founded:

Summary:

São Paulo eliminated Palmeiras 16 times: Libertadores in 1994, 2005 and 2006; Copa do Brasil 2000, 2022 and 2023; Rio-São Paulo in 1998 and 2002; Paulista Championship of 1977, 1979, 1987, 1992, 1998, 2019 and 2021; Super Paulista of 2002.

Palmeiras eliminated São Paulo 5 times: Libertadores 2021; 2000 Brazilian Championship; Paulista Championship of 2008 and 2022; Natel report from 1972.

Grades:

In 1977, São Paulo eliminated Palmeiras in the semifinal of the first phase of the competition and disputed the title with Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto, who became champion. Although he did not eliminate his rival from the competition, he did eliminate him from an official FPF dispute, which had a trophy and everything. A parallel that can be drawn is with the Guanabara Cup, in Rio de Janeiro.

The Laudo Natel Tournament was an official FPF competition, which was part of the entity’s calendar and was held on three occasions: 1972, 1973 and 1975. Due to the tournament’s dispute model, one could say that it would resemble a Cup State of São Paulo. In 1972, São Paulo was eliminated on penalties: 6 to 7.

Detail: there was also a curious case, on August 8, 1962, which served as a tiebreaker for the position of a group in the Torneio Rio-São Paulo for the second phase of the dispute: The game ended in a tie (1 to 1 in normal time and 0 to 0 in extra time). By the strange criterion of public and income, Palmeiras won the first position of the group and São Paulo ranked second. As it turns out, however, “nobody died” – it wasn’t a “knockout”.

In friendly tournaments (not played in a single game, direct confrontation), São Paulo eliminated Palmeiras in the Taça Cidade de Maringá in 1976, and was surpassed by its rival in the Torneio do Café in 1984 and in the Troféu Ramón de Carranza in 1993.
