Seventeen have already been detained as part of the investigation into the armed attack that took place on Saturday in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul during an election meeting of the mayoral candidate of the Justice and Development Party Aziz Yeniai.

This was announced by the Turkish Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, at a press conference for journalists, which took place at the Directorate of Security in Istanbul, writes BTA.

“On Saturday (February 10), an armed attack was carried out in the Kyucyukcekmeje district and one of our citizens was seriously injured. Immediately after the attack, our police units started a large-scale investigation. So far, 17 people have been detained during operations at 57 addresses. Three illegal weapons have been seized . Our operations continue. The Ministry of the Interior has taken all the necessary measures to ensure an environment of peace and security for the local elections, which will be held on March 31,” said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

During the day yesterday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that one of the perpetrators of the attack had been arrested.

The large-scale investigation, which is being conducted by the security forces in coordination with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Istanbul, continues, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç told TRT Haber.

On Saturday, assailants with long-barreled weapons opened fire in Istanbul’s Kucukcekmece district during a campaign rally for the mayoral candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party.

A 22-year-old woman, Ebru Günesh, was seriously injured in the attack, and was taken to hospital in a critical condition. The attackers managed to escape in a car. 17 shell casings were found at the scene of the accident.
