Iran has executed a 17-year-old boy named Hamidreza Azari who was convicted of murder. He was hanged in a prison in the town of Sabsevar in Razavi Khorasan province. This has sparked huge protests in the country against the execution of minors. Azari is reported to be the 68th child to be hanged in Iran.

International media reported that Azari was 16 years old when the crime was committed and 17 years old when he was executed. The news also stated that Azari was an only child and had started working as a scrap worker a few years ago. He was sentenced to death for killing a person in a clash in May.

Protesters are alleging that the execution violates the UN Convention which states that anyone under the age of 18 is treated as a child. Iran International, a Persian-language satellite TV channel, also reported the execution. Iran Human Rights (IHR) criticized Iran for sentencing and executing minors, stating that in Iran a person must be 18 years old to get a driver’s license but 15 years old is enough to carry out the death penalty.
