The 17th Annual Tsunami Memorial Day was observed in Naga yesterday. Those who snatched relatives paid tribute in tears on the beach.

Tsunami Memorial Day

The tsunami that hit the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on December 26, 2004 claimed thousands of lives. More than 6,000 people were killed in Naga district. The 17th annual Tsunami Memorial Day was observed yesterday.

In turn, relatives paid their last respects to the victims in various coastal areas including Nagai Nambiar Nagar, Keechankuppam, Akkaraipet, Nagore Pattinacherry, Samanthanpet and Velankanni. They then paid tribute by lighting candles in the coastal areas. Nagai district fishermen did not go to sea to fish yesterday. Thus the Naga Akkaraipet fishing landing site was found deserted.

Silent procession

Atmasanthi Yagya was performed on behalf of the public before the memorial pillar at Kichchankuppam next to Naga. Then they paid floral tributes on the memorial pillar. Also, a silent procession of students was held on behalf of Kichchankuppam Panchayat Union Middle School. Later in the day, students at the school paid homage to the victims of the tsunami by lighting flower-sprinkled candles on their portraits.

Similarly, a silent procession was held on behalf of the Akkaraipet fishing village from the Tata Nagar Tsunami residence. The procession passed through the main streets and ended at Akkaraipet beach. Later, flowers were laid at the Tsunami Memorial.

Cried on the beach

People sprinkled flowers at the Tsunami Memorial at Nagai Nambiar Nagar Fishing Village Community Center. They then came to the beach in procession and carried candles to pay their respects. Then, the fisher women sat on the beach in grief at the loss of their relatives, looked at the sea and cried and paid their respects in tears.

Similarly, District Collector Arun Thamburaj laid a wreath at the Tsunami Memorial Park at the Nagai Collector’s Office.

Fifteen years after the tsunami hit, the traces still remain unchanged, with fishermen paying tribute to Ninga’s relatives.

Velankanni Cathedral President Iruthayaraj led a silent procession on the occasion of the Tsunami Memorial Day in Velankanni. The procession started from the beach and proceeded through the main streets paying homage to the tsunami by placing a wreath at the Tsunami Memorial Stupa.

It was attended by co-founder Arputharaj, treasurer Ulaganathan, assistant co-founders David Tanraj and Ando Jesuraj, former mayor Thomas Alva Edison, social activist Kingslee Gerald, Arud brothers and sisters political figures and volunteers.

Seaman Tribute

Similarly, we Tamil Party leader Seeman paid homage by placing a flower ring at the Tsunami Memorial Stupa.

Panchayats from Nagore Pattinacherry Sri Seeralamman Temple held a silent procession on behalf of the public. The procession passed through the main streets and paid homage by placing flower rings at the Tsunami Memorial. Their families lit candles and sprinkled flowers at the memorial for the victims of the tsunami.

Tsunami Memorial Day was observed in Vellapallam, Pushpavanam and Kodiakkarai villages. Fishermen paid floral tributes at the Tsunami Memorial. Fishermen in Vedaranyam paid homage by pouring milk into the sea.
