Nepalese soldiers gather at the scene of the plane crash at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal on the 24th (local time). Local authorities reported that a small passenger plane, CRJ-200, belonging to Saurya Airlines, carrying 19 passengers and crew members heading to Pokhara skidded off the runway during takeoff and caught fire. 18 people died in the accident, and only the pilot survived and is receiving treatment at a hospital. 2024.07.24.

The reason the pilot, the sole survivor of a Nepalese plane crash that killed all but one of the passengers, managed to survive has been revealed.

According to foreign media outlets such as the BBC on the 25th (local time), the only survivor of this accident was Captain Manish Ratna Shakya. He was able to miraculously survive thanks to the cockpit being separated and stuck in the container that collided with him first during the crash.

The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. the previous day when a Saurya Airlines passenger plane carrying two pilots and 17 airline staff was flying from Kathmandu to the resort city of Pokhara.

According to witnesses to the accident at the time, the passenger plane suddenly flipped over while taking off from the southern end of the runway, and one wing struck the ground.

The fuselage first collided with a container on the edge of the airport and then fell into a ravine east of the runway. While the rest of the plane was shattered after the crash, Captain Manish Ratna Sakya was found five minutes after the crash with the cockpit stuck in the container and rescued. The captain miraculously survived because the cockpit had separated from the container after colliding with it first.

Captain Shakia was rescued from the cockpit five minutes after the crash in respiratory distress. He suffered injuries to his head and face and a broken spine, but his life is not in danger.

“Captain Shakia’s condition is improving,” a local Civil Aviation Authority official said. After recovering, Captain Shakia plans to participate in the investigation into the cause of the accident. The specific cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

In Nepal, home to the Himalayas, aircraft accidents occur frequently due to rugged mountainous terrain, unpredictable weather, difficult runways for takeoff and landing, aging aircraft, and poor maintenance. Since 2000, 360 people have died in plane and helicopter crashes in Nepal. In January of last year, a passenger plane crashed just before landing in the resort city of Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board.

According to local media, this is the 105th accident since Nepal began air operations in the 1950s.
