The mayor’s party, PRD, attacked that the assassination was cowardly and called for the culprits to be found and brought to justice. According to the Ministry of Defense, forces have been sent to find the shooter, but so far no arrests have been made and the crime gang Los Tequilaros (Tequila Makers) is the main culprit.

Shortly before the attack, members of the Los Tequileros gang, affiliated with a drug cartel, released a video on social media announcing that they would return to the area to fight the other gangs. In the city, which is in the heart of a violent region of the drug cartel war in western Mexico, the violent attack is surprising even by the standards known in the region. This is an area where several drug cartels fight over the transit routes and the violence is extreme.
