Yang Min-hyeok (Gangwon), who has been causing a sensation among teenagers in the professional soccer K League 1 this season, has become the youngest player ever to receive the ‘Player of the Month’ award.

The Korea Professional Football League announced on the 20th that Yang Min-hyeok was the first teenager to receive the K-League Player of the Month (July) award. Yang Min-hyeok, born in April 2006, is 18 years and 3 months old as of July. The previous youngest record was 22 years and 7 months for Cho Young-wook (FC Seoul), who won this award in September 2021. The award is decided by a combination of the K-League Technical Committee and fan votes among players who were selected as the MVP (Most Valuable Player), MOM (Most Improved Player), and Best 11 in the league during the month. Yang Min-hyeok recorded 3 goals and 1 assist in 5 K-League games in July.

Yang Min-hyeok, who previously won the ‘Young Player Award’ and ‘Goal of the Month’ in July, became the first ‘Monthly Triple Crown’ by sweeping all the awards that field players can receive in a month. Yang Min-hyeok won the Young Player Award, which is given to players who are 23 years old or younger and have not been in the K-League for more than three years, for four consecutive months starting in April. Yang Min-hyeok is the first player to win the Young Player Award for three consecutive months since its inception. Yang Min-hyeok’s goal against Jeonbuk on July 26, in which he scored with a powerful right-footed shot, was selected as the Goal of the Month.

Yang Min-hyeok, a third-year student at Gangneung Jeil High School, a youth team under Gangwon, signed a semi-professional contract with Gangwon this season and jumped into the K League 1.

Yang Min-hyeok scored his debut goal in the 2nd round match against Gwangju, setting a record for the youngest scorer in K League 1 history (17 years and 11 months). He started in all the matches (27 matches) the team played this season and is tied for 5th in attack points (13) with 8 goals and 5 assists. Gangwon, led by Yang Min-hyeok, is currently leading K League 1 as of the 20th. Gangwon converted Yang Min-hyeok’s contract to a professional player in June to increase his annual salary.

Yang Min-hyeok, who is making new history in K League 1, is at the top of the league in terms of popularity. The Professional Football League recently collaborated with a character company to sell K League uniforms for 24 days. A total of 2,044 uniforms were sold, and Yang Min-hyeok’s uniform was the most sold with 500. Lee Seung-woo (Jeonbuk) came in second with 300 uniforms sold.

Based on his performance in Gangwon, Yang Min-hyeok signed with Tottenham Hotspur, the English Premier League (EPL) team that Son Heung-min (32) plays for, last month. The contract terms were not disclosed. It is known to be the highest transfer fee for a Korean player who went straight from the K-League to a European stage. Football media outlet ‘Transfermarkt’ estimated Yang Min-hyeok’s transfer fee at 4 million euros (approximately 5.9 billion won). Yang Min-hyeok will join Tottenham after finishing this season in Gangwon. Yang Min-hyeok said, “I want to win the K-League 1 and leave for Tottenham in a good mood.”

There is also interest in whether Yang Min-hyeok will work with Son Heung-min on the national team before joining Tottenham. National soccer team coach Hong Myung-bo (55) will announce the list of players who will play in the 2026 North and Central America World Cup Asian region 3rd qualifying round against Palestine (September 5) and Oman (September 10) on the 26th. On the 18th, coach Hong visited Gangneung Stadium to watch the Gangwon-Gwangju match (3-2, Gangwon won) in which Yang Min-hyeok played. If Yang Min-hyeok boards Hong Myung-bo, he will be named to the national team sooner than Son Heung-min, who was first selected for the national team at the age of 18 years and 5 months.
