The death toll from deadly landslides in the southern state of Kerala has reached at least 188, officials said. Rescue teams have resumed search operations for the 225 missing people who are feared trapped in the mud and debris, DPA reported.
Landslides in the hilly Wayanad region intensified early yesterday morning and people were trapped in their homes even before they woke up.
Authorities are collecting data on the number of people living in the area, found after the landslide and still missing, reported The Hindu.
Incessant rains over the past two days have caused landslides, as a result of which full-flowing rivers have been clogged with mud and stones, bridges have been swept away and roads have been blocked, making rescue operations difficult, BTA writes.
The Army and Navy are assisting local rescuers and the National Disaster Response Force in rescuing people from blocked areas with ropeways and earthmoving machines. Army engineers are building a temporary bridge to rescue people from the completely cut off area of Mundakai.
More than 3,000 people have been admitted to humanitarian camps established in safe locations in the area. Weather forecasts call for more rain.
