Galle: After 19 months of waiting, Australia’s Steve Smith scored a century in Test cricket. Smith’s hat-trick came during the second Test match against Sri Lanka. With this performance, the player surpassed Virat Kohli in the number of centuries.

Steve Smith holds the record for most Test centuries by a batsman currently playing. The player has 28 centuries in his account. Smith surpassed Virat Kohli with 27 centuries to become the first. England’s Joe Root also has 28 centuries. But the lack of number of matches helped Smith.

Smith scored 28 centuries in 87 matches. Root took 121 matches to achieve this century. Kohli is third on the list with 27 centuries from 102 matches. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is fourth and David Warner is fifth with 24 centuries each.

Like Kohli, Smith was struggling to score a century. But the player got his 28th century with a good performance against Sri Lanka. In the first innings of the second Test, Smith scored 109 not out from 212 balls. Kohli’s last Test century was against Bangladesh in 2019.
