Graduated from Geumho Gifted… Bachelor’s course at Vienna State University of Music
Double bassist Yoo Si-heon (19), born in 2005, won first place and a special prize for those under 25 at the 9th Bottesini International Competition, which closed in Crema, Italy on the 27th. This is the first time that a Korean has won the Bottesini International Competition.
Yoo Si-heon will receive a special prize of 1,000 euros (approximately 1.49 million won), a double bass instrument worth 30,000 euros by world-renowned string instrument master Marco Noli, and a bow case from Bogaro & Clemente as the winning prize.
Siheon Yoo competed with 74 double bassists from 29 countries around the world at the Teatro San Domenico in the finals, and won first place by performing Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor with the Bottesini Orchestra (conductor Enrico Pagone). I won it. Second place went to Johan Warzecza (Germany), and third place went to Eva Brockhaus (Germany).
The Bottesini International Competition was founded in 1989 under the leadership of Italian-born double bassist and educator Franco Petracci to honor the works and performances of Giovanni Bottesini, the most outstanding double bassist in history. This competition has established itself as the most important competition held for double bass players around the world, and is held every 2 to 4 years.
Previous major winners include Giuseppe Ettore, first principal of Milan’s La Scala Orchestra (Italy/2nd place in 1989), Christophe Dino, first principal of Radio France Philharmonic (France/1st place in 1992), and first principal of Zurich Philharmonic Orchestra. Darius Misera (Denmark/3rd in 1996), etc. Past Korean winners include Junbin Hwang (3rd place in 2019) and Hyeongju Kim (3rd place in 2022). All of them, along with this winner Yoo Si-heon, are Geumho Gifted Students.
Double bassist Yoo Si-heon debuted at the Geumho Gifted Concert in 2019 and appeared on the stage at the Geumho Young Artist Concert in 2022. Yoo Si-heon studied under Lee Chang-hyung and Jeong Doo-woong, entered Seoul National University two years early, and moved to Austria while attending school. He is currently in his first year of bachelor’s degree at the Vienna University of Music, where he studied under Dominique Wagner.
