New right, old ignorance – are the conservatives now radicalizing themselves?
Freedom, fundamental rights, revolution – themes that are classically left-wing, right? But right-wing conservative camps are increasingly taking over this content. The pandemic situation seems to exacerbate this phenomenon. AfD supporters, indigenous people and lateral thinkers speak of deprivation of liberty, circumcision of basic rights and right-wing revolution. Rights thus propagate an “authoritarian anti-state stance”. Are the conservatives now radicalizing themselves? The Austrian right-wing extremism researcher and publicist Natascha Strobl is also concerned with this question. In her current book “Radicalized Conservatism”, Strobl analyzes the rhetorical and political strategies of Sebastian Kurz and Donald Trump. In it, she shows how the two politicians, as representatives of radicalized conservatism, use resentment to mobilize their supporters or to create their own narratives with the help of fake news. Strobl’s thesis for Germany is: “There is a high probability that we will see the trumpization of the CDU.” But is that really true? How can that be prevented?

Natascha Strobl was born in Vienna in 1985. She is a political scientist specializing in right-wing extremism research. The active anti-fascist co-founded the “Offensive against Right” alliance in Vienna, where she is researching the New Right. Together with Kathrin Glösel and Julian Bruns, she wrote the books »Die Identitären. Handbook on the youth movement of the New Right in Europe ”(Unrast 2014) and“ Right Cultural Revolution. Who and what is the New Right of Today ”(ATTAC basic text. VSA 2015) published. Strobl also founded the “Biwaz – Educational Workshop Antifascism and Civil Courage” and runs an anti-fascist blog. Since 2018 she has been writing (ad hoc) analyzes and classifications on Twitter in order to disseminate knowledge quickly and easily. She also has the hashtag#NatsAnalysebrought to life.

Jakob Augstein has been the publisher and managing director of the weekly newspaper “der Freitag” since 2008. Born in Hamburg in 1967, he studied politics from 1989 to 1993 at the Free University of Berlin and at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris. For ten years he was a reporter in Berlin and East Germany for the Süddeutsche Zeitung. From 2011 to 2018 he wrote the column “In doubt left” on “Spiegel online”. From 2011 to 2020 he had a weekly exchange of blows on the political topic of the week with Nikolaus Blome, the former deputy editor-in-chief of the Bildzeitung, in the Phoenix program “Augstein and Blome”.
