Following the announcement that the US State Department has approved the sale of new weapons to the Israeli government with a total value of $20 billion, Nadia Daar, Director of Policy and Impact at Amnesty International USA, made the following statement:

It is unlikely that the Biden administration will approve arms sales to the Israeli government worth a total of $20 billion while war crimes and human rights violations are committed by Israeli forces against the Palestinian population in the occupied Palestinian Territories. The Palestinian population of the occupied Gaza Strip is still at risk of genocide and suffering from planned famine amid ongoing Israeli military attacks. There is no safe place for civilians in Gaza.

Given this new decision by the Biden administration, Amnesty International is calling on the US Congress to take urgent action to enforce US and international laws regarding the ban on sales, including by presenting a collective resolution of concern. Amnesty International reiterates its calls for the US government to immediately halt all arms sales and transfers to the Israeli government and declare an immediate and permanent cessation.”
