Coimbatore: More than two weeks after submitting property tax applications, taxpayers are left reeling due to shortage of tax collectors in the wards.

There are 5.45 lakh tax payers in 100 wards of Coimbatore Corporation. According to the order of the Tamil Nadu government, the property tax has been increased in the Coimbatore Corporation.

As this tax increase is much higher than that of the Chennai Corporation, various parties have demanded a review.

However, the demand was rejected and the increased property tax was implemented. Property tax is divided into three categories A, B and C.

For this, an application for levy of property tax containing details such as house tax, ward etc. is received from the house owner and tax is collected.

For tax collection, there should be 100 tax collectors, one per ward. 46 sanitation workers who have been working in the Coimbatore Corporation for many years as Registration Clerks have recently been promoted to Health Supervisors (SSOs) based on merit.

Similarly, health supervisors who had been working at the same place for more than three years were also transferred.

Due to this, the posts of tax collectors, including health supervisors, who were holding additional responsibility, became vacant.

Since there are no 20 tax collectors in the corporation, people have been troubling the corporation offices for more than 20 days after submitting an application demanding tax levy.

Vacancies to be filled!

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pratap said, “Due to change of post, currently there are only 80 tax collectors.

The post of tax collector will be filled as per the new ordinance.

“One tax collector will be appointed for the ward with high tax payers and in case of low tax payers, one tax collector will be appointed for both wards within this week,” he said.
