New Delhi: Who does not know veteran actor and politician Sunil Dutt? Even though he is not among us today, who can forget his acting and work done during his political innings. Remember the period of 1987 when militancy was at its peak in Punjab. Then, to establish harmony and brotherhood, Sunil Dutt did the Mahashanti Padyatra from Mumbai (then Bombay) to the Golden Temple in Amritsar. During this journey that lasted for about 78 days, Sunil Dutt reached Amritsar after walking 2000 kilometers. During this journey he developed jaundice and developed blisters on his feet. Despite this, Sunil Dutt’s morale did not break. Daughter Priya Dutt was also included in his ‘Mahashanti Padyatra’. Apart from these, hundreds of people were walking with him. During this Padyatra, it is said that Sunil Dutt held more than 500 meetings.
That march from Bombay to Amritsar in 1987
When Sunil Dutt started the Mahashanti Padyatra in 1987, it was initially said that a glimpse of Bombay cinema could be seen in it. The actor chose a mission that seemed like a story from a movie. The special thing in this was that his daughter Priya was giving full support. She was leading the march with all her might, holding the Indian flag in her hand. The group of youth from Bombay also created a different atmosphere through special programs. Till this journey did not reach Punjab, it looked different. However, after entering Punjab, this journey no longer looked like a film. There was a tremendous change in this. In those days the situation in Punjab was bad and there was an atmosphere of fear all around. However, during the journey in Punjab, many such incidents happened which were heart touching.

He was welcomed as if he was the ‘Messiah’ whom people had been waiting for for a long time. A ‘Messiah’ who is capable of bringing peace wherever he goes. During the journey in Punjab, a huge crowd of people joined him on the way. During his padyatra, rose petals were showered on the actor and he was also garlanded. During this, slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’ were also raised.
We just want peace… when women spoke to Sunil Dutt
There were many very emotional moments in Sunil Dutt’s journey when women would bow at his feet with tears in their eyes and simply appeal that ‘we just want peace’. Sunil Dutt also had a deep impact on the appeal of the women and common people there. It was as if he had become completely obsessed with the target with whom he had set out for the journey. Sunil Dutt’s 78-day journey finally ended emotionally when he offered prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. There he also held discussions with Sikh religious gurus and militants.
Daughter Priya told what happened to Sunil Dutt in the Golden Temple
Sunil Dutt’s daughter Priya mentioned things related to her father’s trip. He told that when his father Sunil Dutt had reached the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the police had advised him to wear a bulletproof jacket to go inside. However he refused to wear it. When he went inside, armed people took him away. They all had guns in their hands. Priya Dutt told that the people present at the gate of the Golden Temple had recognized Sunil Dutt. They had stopped the policemen in plain clothes from going inside. At that time those armed people had said that Sunil Dutt is now their responsibility. They were the same people who had taken over the Golden Temple. Sunil Dutt came out safely after the puja. His visit played an important role in improving the situation in Punjab.
