Estíbaliz Urresola’s debut feature continues to receive nominations at the main national and international awards. With ‘20,000 species of bees’, the Álava director has been nominated for the LUX European Film Audience Award, an award from the European Parliament that recognizes the best feature film of the year with a social focus. The film will compete with the French ‘En el Adamant’, by Nicolas Philibert, the Estonian ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’, by Anna Hintsy and the German ‘Sala de profesores’, by Ilker Çatak.

These are titles with a long history of major competitions. Proof of this is that the documentary ‘En el Adamant’ won the Golden Bear for best film at the Berlinale. Precisely, in that prestigious German festival it coincided with Urresola, since it was there that the film was released in which it addresses the story of Cocó, an 8-year-old girl who spends a summer with her family and marks both the protagonist and the rest of the cast. Sofía Otero, the 10-year-old girl from Basauri, won the Silver Bear for best performance for an emotional film that addresses issues such as transsexuality or care.

Only 15 days ago we learned that Urresola was nominated for another award, the European Film Academy Awards promoted by the academy (EFA) dedicated to the seventh art in the old continent. In this new nomination with a similar name and of an international nature, the choice of the winning film is carried out in an open survey on the web that is added to the votes of the MEPs. In addition, Urresola’s feature film sounds like one of the favorites to represent Spain at the Oscars.

This is the third Spanish feature film to receive a nomination for the LUX Awards after ‘El Reino’ (2019), by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and ‘Alcarràs’ (2023), by Carla Simón. This award was created in 2007 to support the distribution of European films that address the “cultural diversity” of the continent and issues such as inequality, inclusion, tolerance or solidarity.
