New Medical Standard for Treatment of Bronchiolitis and Blocked Noses in Young Children

In a shift from previous recommendations, the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG) has updated its guidelines for the treatment of bronchiolitis in children, advising against the use of beta-2 sympathomimetic medication.

The 2020 standard had recommended a trial treatment with beta-2 sympathomimetic for cases of suspected bronchiolitis. However, after analyzing the latest studies, the NHG working group found that the medication may not significantly reduce the risk of hospital admission compared to a placebo and may also have side effects. As a result, the use of bronchodilators via nebulization and inhalation with a spacer should be approached with caution.

Furthermore, the new standard provides advice on the treatment of a blocked nose in young children. The NHG recommends administering a saline solution before feeding to prevent dehydration, particularly in babies under 6 months who can only breathe through their nose. In cases where this is insufficient, doctors may prescribe xylometazoline nasal drops or nasal spray to children older than 3 months.

Bronchiolitis is an infection of the lower respiratory tract caused by respiratory viruses such as the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus. It primarily affects children aged 2 years or younger during the autumn and winter seasons, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and fever. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.

The updated guidelines aim to provide more effective and safer treatments for bronchiolitis and its associated symptoms, taking into account the latest scientific evidence. It is important for healthcare professionals and caregivers to be aware of these changes in order to ensure the best possible care for young children with bronchiolitis and blocked noses.]
