Iranian Narges Mohammadi, jailed since November 2021 and winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, ‌was released from⁢ prison on Wednesday for three weeks on medical grounds, her defense announced on X.

“According ​too the opinion of the medical ⁣examiner, the ​Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has suspended the‌ execution of‍ Narges Mohammadi’s sentence for three weeks”reports his lawyer, Mostafa Nili, who specifies⁢ that the activist “he was released from ‌prison”.

Narges Mohammadi, 52, has been⁣ repeatedly convicted ​and imprisoned for twenty-five years for her commitment‌ against compulsory veiling for women and ‍against the death penalty. He has spent much of ⁤the last ⁣decade in‌ prison.

“The reason for his release is his physical condition after the removal ​of ⁢a tumor and⁢ a bone​ graft, carried out twenty-one days ago”explained​ Mostafa Nili. “The removed tumor was benign, ‌but [Narges Mohammadi] must ​be examined every three months”according to his lawyer.

In June,the ⁢Iranian activist⁤ was sentenced ⁢to a new‌ one-year prison sentence for “propaganda against‌ the ⁤state”. She had refused to attend his trial hearing‍ after ‍unsuccessfully requesting that it be opened to the ​public.

In March,⁢ the activist ‌released an ⁣audio message from his prison, in ‍which he⁢ denounced a “full-scale war against women” ‌ in the Islamic Republic.
