Auguste Paraina, presidential candidate, was summoned, arrested in Ivato and taken to the police cybercrime department in Anosy yesterday afternoon. It was investigated following a complaint for defamation, spreading false news and inciting hatred according to Eléonore Johasy, MP and coordinator of the Tsara tahafina party, Auguste Paraina’s party.

Several members of the Candidates Collective came to Anosy yesterday evening. Eléonore Johasy, for her part, after explaining to the press the charges against Paraina Auguste, denounced and described this arrest as intimidation. The speed with which the police looked into the matter was indeed surprising; this is where the question of possible exploitation can be raised.

Yesterday evening after a few hours of detention, Auguste Paraina was released. He subsequently made a short video posted on Facebook to apologize, admitting that his information had not been cross-checked. The apology was made voluntarily according to him. Whether there would be prosecution or not after this apology, these are the questions.

During the meeting of the Collective of Candidates on November 13 in Itaosy, Auguste Paraina declared that one of the candidates with 9 other people were summoned by British justice in the Gemfields affair, which led to the arrest of Romy Voos Andrianarisoa, former chief of staff of the Presidency, accused of corruption. Even if he did not explicitly cite Andry Rajoelina in his remarks, the latter felt touched and offered explanations during a televised debate on the election on the evening of November 13. Andry Rajoelina denied a possible summons against him and any involvement in the Romy Voos Andrianarisoa affair.
