This Sunday evening, thanks to the renewal of half of the upper house of Parliament, Pierre Charon lost his bet, collecting only 5.75% of the votes. The outgoing elected LR had gone into dissidence for these senatorial elections, his LR party having decided not to nominate him, as we revealed at the beginning of July. He presented a list entirely from civil society, apart from himself, entitled “Let’s Liberate Paris”, on which Pauline Déroulède, wheelchair tennis champion who is aiming for the 2024 Paralympic Games, appeared in second position.

The right left in dispersed order in this constituency, with at least three lists, for twelve seats to be filled in the capital. The major right-wing voters had the choice between the official list led by senator Catherine Dumas, who obtained 3 seats, and that led by the president of the LR federation of Paris, the elected representative of the 15th Agnès Evren, who collected 1 seat.

Pierre Charon did not appreciate his ouster from the official LR list in favor of lawyer Francis Szpiner, mayor of the 16th arrondissement pushed by the boss of LR senators, Bruno Retailleau. He did not miss an opportunity to recall that his rival was beaten in five legislative elections, “including in the imperishable circo of the late Claude Goasguen”.

Paris was one of the 27 departments where more than three senators had to be elected, in this case twelve. Voting carried out proportionally and by list. Eight lists had been submitted in Paris. Nationally, 170 of 348 Senate seats were up for renewal this Sunday. They were chosen by indirect universal ballot by 78,000 “electors”.
