2023 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game: Top Prospects, Rules, and How to Watch

by time news

Seattle’s T-Mobile Park is gearing up to host the 24th edition of the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m. ET. This highly anticipated baseball event will showcase 50 of the game’s top Minor Leaguers in an exciting display of talent.

Fans can catch all the action exclusively on Peacock and SiriusXM, with MLB Network co-producing the telecast. The star-studded broadcasting team for the event includes Dave Sims on play-by-play, Yonder Alonso and Jonathan Mayo as analysts, and Siera Santos and Caroline Pineda as reporters.

The format for the game consists of prospects split into American League and National League sides. This change was introduced in 2019, replacing the previous US vs. World format. The 2021 edition saw the NL emerge victorious, while the AL claimed its first victory in the format last summer.

The game will last seven innings, but in the event of a tie, an eighth inning will be played. However, if the score remains tied after the eighth inning, the game will be declared a tie. Regardless of the score, a bottom of the 7th inning will always be played. If an 8th inning is necessary, the batting team will start with a runner on second base.

In the event of an injury, players will be allowed to re-enter the game. Additionally, the ABS (Automatic Balls and Strikes) Challenge System will be in effect. Each team will have two challenges, initiated by the players themselves by tapping their helmet or hat. Once a challenge is used, it cannot be regained.

The 2023 Futures Game boasts an impressive lineup of prospects, with 28 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects set to take the field. The highly anticipated No. 1 overall prospect, Jackson Holliday, will be joined by fellow top prospects such as Jackson Chourio, Marcelo Mayer, James Wood, Jordan Lawlar, and Pete Crow-Armstrong.

The NL holds the advantage in terms of Top 100 representatives, with 16 compared to the AL’s 12. The American League features loaded position groups with six infielders and three catchers among the Top 100. Meanwhile, the NL showcases five Top 100 infielders and five Top 100 outfielders.

Pitching talent will also be on display, with the NL having four of the five Top 100 arms in the game. Players such as Kyle Harrison, Mick Abel, Tink Hence, and Jacob Misiorowski will showcase their skills for the NL, while Owen White represents the AL.

Former Seattle Mariners fan favorites Harold Reynolds and Raul Ibañez will serve as managers for the AL and NL Futures teams, respectively. Coaches for the event include former Major League All-Stars and Mariners legends such as Adrián Beltré, Jay Buhner, Mike Cameron, Alvin Davis, Félix Hernández, Jamie Moyer, Dan Wilson, and Randy Winn.

The Futures Game has a rich history of featuring future baseball stars. Eight of the top ten career active leaders in Wins Above Replacement (WAR), and 14 of the top 20, have previously participated in the game. Notable alumni include Miguel Cabrera, Clayton Kershaw, Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts, Fernando Tatis Jr., and the recently debuted Wander Franco.

In addition, seven players who have participated in Development Programs led by MLB and USA Baseball are featured on the Futures Game rosters. These players include Lawrence Butler, Justin Crawford, Harry Ford, Tink Hence, J.P. Massey, Nasim Nunez, and Kyren Paris.

Baseball fans are eagerly anticipating the 2023 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which promises to be an exciting showcase of the next generation of talent.
