Sobek Research Awards 2023 honor outstanding achievements in Multiple Sclerosis Research

The prestigious Sobek Research Awards 2023 honored pioneers and outstanding scientists in the field of multiple sclerosis research at a ceremony held at the Stuttgart University of Music on December 15. The event recognized the groundbreaking achievements of researchers and scientists in the fight against multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects millions of people worldwide.

The highest prize in MS research in Europe, worth 100,000 euros, was equally awarded to Prof. Dr. med. Martin Kerschensteiner, Head of the Institute for Clinical Neuroimmunology at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), Munich and to Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Korn, deputy director of the Neurological Clinic at the Rechts der Isar Clinic at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and head of the Institute for Experimental Neuroimmunology at TUM.

The 2023 Young Talent Prize, worth 15,000 euros, was awarded to Dr. med. Dr. rer. biol. hum. Max Kaufmann, assistant doctor in the clinic and polyclinic for neurology at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and scientist at the Institute for Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis at the UKE.

Additionally, a Honorary award for life’s work was given to Prof. em. Dr. med. Adriano Fontana from Zurich, marking the first time in the history of the award that the lifelong achievement of a researcher was honored for decades of commitment to MS research.

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system by causing the body’s immune system to attack the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. The disease is currently incurable but can be treated.

The Sobek Research Awards, sponsored by the Roman, Marga and Mareille Sobek Foundation, aim to honor groundbreaking achievements in MS research and associated basic research. The decision criteria for the awards are solely based on the quality and excellence of the research performance.

The prize winners, Prof. Dr. med. Martin Kerschensteiner and Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Korn, have made significant contributions to advancing the understanding of MS and the development of more targeted therapies for the disease. Their research results have been published in high-ranking scientific journals and are considered groundbreaking in their field.

With the prizes, the Sobek Foundation aims to recognize outstanding scientists whose research results open up new perspectives for the diagnosis and therapy of MS. The award ceremony takes place in collaboration with AMSEL, Action for Multiple Sclerosis Sufferers, State Association of the DMSG in Baden-Württemberg eV, and the DMSG Federal Association, as well as under the patronage of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Art.

The event highlighted the importance of the outstanding scientific work of researchers in the fight against MS and emphasized the potential for a better future with MS through continued research and innovation.]
