A major incident occurred on an Alaska Airlines flight when the pilot admitted to passengers over the intercom that he did not have the proper license to land at his intended airport in Utah. As a result, the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at another airport. Here’s how the bizarre situation unfolded.

According to the New York Post, Alaska Airlines Flight 3491 was headed to Jackson Hole Airport in Utah. Mid-flight, the pilot admitted to passengers that he was not authorized to land at Jackson Hole because he did not have the necessary certification.

So the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at Salt Lake City Airport. There he switched with another pilot who was qualified to land at the desired airport. Turning to the passengers, the pilot said, “Hello, I’m very sorry, but since I do not have the appropriate certificate to land at Jackson Hole, we have to divert the plane.”

The awkwardness was compounded by the fact that passengers had to wait on the plane for an hour and a half until a new pilot arrived to take them to their final destination.
