In recent days, storms and heavy rains have hit Italy after weeks of intense heat, with floods and landslides causing severe damage in the northern part of the country.

Witnesses told the Italian news agency ANSA that the yacht’s mast broke during the storm, causing it to lose its balance and sink near the village of Porticello, near Palermo. However, those who witnessed the storm said that the storm was not expected to be so violent.

According to the ship tracking app VesselFinder, the Bayesian left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on August 14 and last appeared on radar east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigational status of “at anchor.” By the evening of August 19, the storm had worsened, causing the sinking.

It is noted that 15 passengers were rescued. Among them is a one-year-old child. There is also information about one dead and 6 missing. Among those who were not found by rescuers are citizens of Great Britain, the USA and Canada.

Among the missing is Mike Lynch, 59, co-founder of Autonomy Corporation and founder of Invoke Capital, who has been called the “British Bill Gates.” The billionaire was charged with fraud – in June 2024, a jury in San Francisco acquitted Lynch of the $11 billion sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Eight of the rescued were taken to local hospitals. All are in stable condition, local media reported.
