A former Olympic athlete was found dead in her Las Vegas apartment. The body of Venezuelan-born Daniella Larreal Chirinos was discovered Friday after she had not shown up for work for a week. Authorities believe the 50-year-old choked on food.

Forensic experts determined that Chirinos died Sunday, Aug. 11, from asphyxiation. An autopsy report found solid food in her throat.

Chirinos dominated cycling in her home country for more than two decades. She competed in five Olympic Games, including Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000), Athens (2004) and London (2012). She competed professionally until her retirement in 2014.

Although the 50-year-old has never won an Olympic medal, she did win three medals (two gold and one silver) at the 2014 South American Games. That same year, she won a silver medal at the Pan American Athletics Championships and another silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
