US President Joe Biden, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, said the need to end the war in Gaza was becoming increasingly clear. He said his recent hostage deal proposal brought the parties “closer than ever” to a ceasefire since October 7.
In his speech, the American president stressed that “the deaths of many people on both sides of the conflict” require an immediate end to hostilities.
Biden recalled that he decided to run for US President in 2020 after the events in Charlottesville in 2017, when he saw neo-Nazis shouting anti-Semitic and racist slogans. “We are at war for the soul of America,” the head of the White House said, emphasizing that he could not stand aside and watch such manifestations of hatred.
He also highlighted a number of his administration’s accomplishments, including praising his vice president, Kamala Harris. He noted that Donald Trump, in his opinion, is unfit to be president and lies about everything, including the crime situation in the country.
Biden was forced to cut short his speech as pro-Palestinian protesters tried to disrupt his speech. They waved signs against arms sales to Israel and tried to force their way onto the stage. However, the crowd responded with support for Biden, chanting “We love Joe.” The president responded by saying that the protesters had a right to express their opinions and reiterated that the death toll from the conflict must be reduced.
