On August 22, a powerful volcanic eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, located southwest of Reykjavik, making it the sixth in the last nine months in Iceland. Residents of the island, who have become accustomed to constant earthquakes and volcanic activity, were again in danger. In connection with this, the authorities were forced to evacuate the fishing village of Grindavik, located near the capital.

“Bild” writes about this.

The eruption, which had been expected for weeks, began shortly after a strong earthquake. Lava broke through the earth’s crust and began flowing across the surface of the peninsula. The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that the crack through which the lava flowed was about four kilometers long. RÚV broadcast the dramatic and frightening images live, showing the molten magma rushing out and a cloud of hot gas rising a kilometer into the night sky.

Earlier this January, a similar eruption destroyed several homes on the northern edge of the village of Grindavik, population about 4,000. Now residents are watching the events with concern, fearing that the lava flow will reach their homes again.

This time, the lava is rapidly flowing over cooled volcanic rock formed by previous eruptions. This newly formed network of lava veins poses a serious threat to local infrastructure and homes. It is currently unknown how severely the village of Grindavik will be affected by the new eruption, but authorities are already taking all possible measures to protect residents.

While experts continue to monitor the situation, the country’s population, accustomed to harsh manifestations of nature, remains on high alert, understanding that it is difficult to rely on such an active volcano as the one in Iceland.

Earlier, “Cursor” reported that a tourist fell inside a volcano while posing.

While posing for photographs, the Chinese woman tripped and fell backwards into an active volcano.
