An investigation has been launched in Germany into the alleged activity of Russian drones spotted over important infrastructure, including a shut-down nuclear power plant in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
BILD writes about this.
The Flensburg city prosecutor’s office confirmed that the drone incidents are being treated as possible acts of sabotage organised by agents believed to be acting in Russian interests.
According to information received from BILD sources, the first drone flights were recorded on August 8. Since then, drone flights have been regularly observed in the area of the nuclear power plant, the LNG terminal and chemical plants, which has caused alarm among local authorities and security services.
The latest recorded incident occurred on August 22, when a drone flew at high speed over an industrial area, violating a no-fly zone, which put part of the Schleswig-Holstein police on alert.
According to an internal police report, there were several cases of violations of the no-fly zone. One of the incidents allegedly involved a military drone. According to investigators, Russian agents may have launched the drones from ships in the North Sea.
Experts have named the Russian Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicles, which have a range of up to 600 kilometers and can reach speeds of over 100 km/h, as the most likely type of drone used in these incidents.
Senior prosecutor Bernd Winterfeld noted that the investigation is being conducted on suspicion of intelligence activities aimed at sabotage, given the multiple instances of drones flying over critical facilities in the region. The German State Security Service also believes that these drones could be used for sabotage.
