Legendary football coach and former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 77.

Eriksson’s family confirmed his death. Their statement read:

“After a long illness, Sven-Goran Eriksson passed away this morning surrounded by his family”

Ericsson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and earlier this year was given a year to live.

Sven-Goran Eriksson made history as England’s first foreign manager when he took over in 2001. Under his leadership, the team known as the “golden generation” included stars such as David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.

After the 2006 World Cup, Eriksson left his post as England manager and took charge of the Mexico and Ivory Coast national teams, as well as English clubs Manchester City and Leicester City.

He has also managed a number of famous European teams, including Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio.

Due to deteriorating health, he stepped down as sporting director of Swedish club Karlstad in February 2023.

Following his diagnosis, Eriksson fulfilled a long-time dream by hosting a Liverpool Legends charity match against Ajax at Anfield in March. He described the moment as “absolutely beautiful” as Liverpool won 4-2.

Earlier, Cursor reported that the former Olympic athlete choked while eating.
