A shocking incident involving two airline passengers who locked a crying baby in a plane toilet has sparked outrage in China.

The incident occurred on August 24 on a Juneyao Airlines flight from Guiyang to Shanghai.

The incident gained widespread publicity this week after a video of a crying baby surfaced on Chinese social media. It showed the women in a locked toilet stall with a crying baby, who appeared to be about a year old.

“You won’t be released until you stop crying,” one of the women sitting on the toilet told the girl as she struggled to break free. The child was seen crying and reaching for the door, according to a video posted on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.

When the baby finally stopped crying, the woman filming the video picked him up and said, “If you make any more noise, we’ll go back (to the toilet).”

The baby was travelling with her grandparents and cried non-stop during the nearly three-hour flight, the airline said in a statement on Monday.

With the grandmother’s consent, two passengers took the child to the toilet to “bring her under control.” However, the following day, following public criticism, the airline’s customer service department apologised for the incident and for the “failure of the crew to intervene.” They also condemned the behaviour of the two passengers.

One of the women who posted the video online said she wanted to ensure a “safe flight” for other passengers. However, her post quickly sparked a backlash, with many social media users accusing her of being callous and child abuse. The video was later removed.

Earlier, Cursor wrote that a fatal incident occurred involving a Delta plane in Atlanta.
