Rebecca Cheptegei, who represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics and placed 44th, has died. The hospital announced that she died after three days in intensive care. Her vital organs failed to recover.

Cheptegei was set on fire by her partner earlier this week. She was admitted to hospital with burns covering 75 percent of her body. Her partner, Dixon Endima Marang, was also injured in the fire and remains in hospital.

The hospital director said: “Unfortunately we lost her after all her organs failed last night.” He added that a full report would be released later in the day. Investigators say Cheptegei was attacked after returning from church with her children. Her partner allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire.

Neighbours rescued the couple and took them to hospital. Cheptegei’s father, Mazi Joseph Cheptegei, explained that the two had previously separated, lived separately and were just friends. He said they had a row over land in Andabasa where the incident took place. “They were just friends and I wonder why he wanted to take things that belonged to my daughter,” Mazi Cheptegei said.
