A 14-year-old gunman opened fire yesterday at a high school in the US state of Georgia, killing at least four people, including two students, and wounding nine others, according to law enforcement.
The shooter, also a student at the school, was taken into custody. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says he will be charged with murder and tried as an adult.
Among the dead were also two teachers.
The shooting occurred near the town of Winder, about 70 kilometers northeast of Atlanta, the state capital.
According to the FBI Atlanta and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Gray was questioned by law enforcement last year in connection with “several anonymous online threats to commit a school shooting at an unspecified location and time.” There was no basis for an arrest at the time.
Student Leela Sayarath said the shooter left the classroom at the start of algebra class around 9:45 a.m. When he returned toward the end of class, he knocked to let himself back in. Another student went to answer the door, but Leela said he noticed the classmate had a gun and did not open the door. The shooter then went into the next classroom and opened fire, she said.
