Why is Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan seeking to join BRICS?
An expert commented on his motivation in a commentary for Bild.
It is known that Erdogan has officially submitted an application for the country to join BRICS, an association where the main roles are played by Russia and China. In addition to them, BRICS includes such countries as Iran, Brazil, India, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia and the UAE.
A representative of the ruling Justice and Development Party noted that Erdogan has repeatedly emphasized Turkey’s desire to become a full member of BRICS, and the process has already been launched. According to Bloomberg, the vote on Turkey’s admission to BRICS could take place in October this year.
Turkey expert Eren Guvercin noted that Erdogan has long been playing a double game, flirting with BRICS. He demonstrates his geopolitical indispensability to the West, while simultaneously getting closer to Russia and China.
The reason for this decision, according to Bloomberg, is the protracted negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the European Union. Despite almost 20 years of discussions, Turkey is still no closer to EU membership.
Guvercin added that Erdogan feels unfairly offended and is inclined to blame the West for Turkey’s failures.
“Erdogan is always offended. He does not see the reason for Turkey’s failure to join the EU in his own policy. He believes that the West is behind all attempts to stop Turkey’s rise under Erdogan. In this respect, he is very similar to Putin,” Güvercin concluded.
