After US President Joe Biden dropped out of the election race to focus on foreign policy, in particular the war in the Gaza Strip, the situation began to develop intensified.
This is reported in a CNN analytical article from September 7, written by Stephen Collinson, who cites sources in the White House. According to him, Biden’s entourage notes that the president is obsessed with this topic.
The White House is determined that a ceasefire in Gaza should be achieved before the elections, and the administration is convinced that 90 percent of all obstacles have already been removed – 14 of the 18 sections of the agreement have been agreed upon. However, Israel, as noted, does not share Washington’s confidence in imminent success.
One reason, Collinson says, is Biden’s desire to avoid leaving a legacy of foreign policy failure for his successor, Kamala Harris. That motivates the president to increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, though his options are limited. Biden is unlikely to take steps like limiting arms sales to Israel, and Harris is unlikely to want to start her presidency with such steps.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Netanyahu inside Israel from military circles that want to pause the war in Gaza in order to prepare for a possible conflict in the north. However, political factors such as the influence of Itamar Ben-Gvir could weaken the effectiveness of both internal and external pressure.
