Former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has served as NATO Secretary General since 2014. He will be replaced by Mark Rutte, a former Dutch Prime Minister.

Stoltenberg will not be unemployed after leaving the post of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). It is already known that he will be the head of the Munich Security Conference. However, he will only take up this position after the next congress, which is scheduled for February 2025. The current head of the Munich Security Forum, Christoph Goesgen, took up this position only in 2022. And Wolfgang Ischinger, the President of the Munich Security Conference Foundation Board, has held this position for many years, and he will retain it even when Stoltenberg joins the organization.
It is known that Jens Stoltenberg’s term as NATO Secretary General was supposed to end on September 30, 2022, but in March 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, his term was extended twice.
Rutte announced his intention to run for NATO Secretary General to replace Stoltenberg in October 2023, and in February 2024, he received the support of the governments of the United States, Britain, Germany, and France. Over the next few months, he overcame opposition from Turkey, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. At that time, his last rival, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, withdrew from the race for the post of Secretary General. And on June 26, the North Atlantic Council appointed Rutte as NATO Secretary General.
