The question of whether Brazil will arrest Vladimir Putin, who plans to attend the G20 summit, remains open.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his opinion on this matter in an interview with the Brazilian Metropoles.
Zelensky noted that Brazil is a party to the Rome Statute and is hosting the G20 summit this year. He believes that if Putin is able to attend the meeting and is not arrested, it will be a serious problem.
The Ukrainian President also asked how the world’s leading states would act when they were about to discuss important issues with a man for whom the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant.
“I am concerned about how G20 countries, especially those that advocate for the protection of democracy and respect for international law, will discuss issues with a person who has an arrest warrant issued, especially in connection with crimes against children,” Zelensky wondered.
By the way, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of illegally deporting Ukrainian children and moving Ukrainians to Russia in March 2023. However, on September 3, the Russian dictator visited Mongolia without hindrance. This was his first visit to a country that ratified the Rome Statute and was supposed to arrest him under an ICC warrant for war crimes. However, Mongolia said that Putin’s arrest was impossible due to its energy dependence on Russia.
Let us recall that “Kursor” wrote that the Indian Foreign Ministry announced the return to their homeland of 45 citizens of the country who had fraudulently ended up in the Russian army, participated in the war against Ukraine, but were dismissed at the request of the Indian side.
