2024 University Admission Results: Higher Scores for Lower-Ranked Programs Amid Declining Standards in Elite Schools

The admission statistics for 2024, announced yesterday, Thursday, July 25, indicated a drop in scores for high-ranking schools and an increase for lower-ranking ones. In general, there was an increase in 38% of the departments, while the remaining 62% recorded a decrease.

Success Rates

According to data from the Ministry of Education, the total number of candidates reached 73,161 (61,985 from General High Schools and 11,176 from Vocational High Schools), and a total of 63,412 candidates from General and Vocational High Schools were admitted to universities, higher ecclesiastical academies, ASPAIT, ASTE, military and police schools, and academies of the fire service, merchant marine, and coast guard.

More specifically, the success rate for candidates from General High Schools was 69.7%, while the corresponding rate for candidates from Vocational High Schools was 37.61%.

The Top and Bottom 5 Schools

This year, as well as last year, the highest admission score for 2024 was recorded by the School of Architectural Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, with 19,335 points, despite a decrease of 615 points compared to last year. Overall, among the top five departments with the highest admission scores, there are two architecture departments and one medical department.

More specifically, the departments with the highest admission scores are as follows:

School of Architectural Engineering at NTUA in Athens, with an admission score of 19,335 points.

Department of International and European Studies at the University of Macedonia, in Thessaloniki, with an admission score of 18,895 points.

Medical School at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), with an admission score of 18,775 points.

School of Architectural Engineering at the University of Patras, with an admission score of 18,554 points.

Department of English Language and Literature at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with an admission score of 18,550 points.

On the other hand, the lowest admission score recorded this year was 6,860 points from the Department of Regional and Economic Development of the Agricultural University of Athens in Amfissa.

More specifically, the five departments with the lowest admission scores this year are:

Department of Regional and Economic Development at the Agricultural University of Athens (Amfissa), with an admission score of 6,860 points.

Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Western Macedonia (Grevena), with an admission score of 7,415 points.

Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Western Macedonia (Kozani), with an admission score of 7,550 points.

Department of Accounting and Finance at the University of Ioannina, with an admission score of 7,570 points.

Department of Business Administration at the University of the Aegean in Chios, with an admission score of 7,830 points.

Admission Scores in Popular Departments

Admission scores for most of the popular departments in Higher Education showed a downward trend.

More specifically, law schools recorded a drop ranging from 100 points (Law School of Athens) to 325 points (Law School of Komotini – Democritus University of Thrace), while psychology departments recorded declines of 180 to 250 points, except for the Psychology department at SSAS in Thessaloniki, which experienced a drop of 610 points.

Medical schools also recorded declines ranging from 225 to 325 points.

Most Polytechnic schools also saw a decrease in scores, dropping up to 400-700 points.

A similar downward trend is observed in most Computer Science departments, with declines of 225 to 740 points. Notably, the Computer Science and Telecommunications department at the University of Thessaly in Lamia recorded a drop of 1,425 points. Conversely, the Computer Science department at the University of Western Macedonia in Kastoria experienced an increase of 1,280 points.

The situation was mixed regarding Economic schools, with admission scores ranging either downwards from 75 points (Department of Economic and Regional Development – Panteion University) to 550 points (Department of Economic Science – Athens University of Economics and Business), or upwards, from 40 points (Department of Economic Sciences Rethymno – University of Crete) to 955 (Department of Economic Sciences Kastoria – University of Western Macedonia).

Largest Increases and Decreases

The largest increase in terms of points was recorded by the Music Studies departments of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Ioannina, and University of Athens. More specifically, the top five departments with the largest increases are as follows:

Music Studies at AUTh, admission score: 14,310, an increase of 4,500 points.

Music Studies at the University of Ioannina (Arta), admission score: 15,250, an increase of 3,460 points.

Music Studies at NKUA, admission score: 14,510 points, an increase of 3,380 points.

Nursing at the University of the Peloponnese (Tripoli), admission score: 11,950 points, an increase of 1,680 points.

Mechanical Engineering at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (Heraklion), admission score: 11,395 points, an increase of 1,595 points.

On the contrary, three of the five schools with the largest decreases in points are military schools. More specifically:

School of Permanent Non-Commissioned Officers of the Air Force, admission score: 13,155 points, a decrease of 3,160 points.

Military School of Evzones (Corps), admission score: 12,415 points, a decrease of 3,140 points.

Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpretation at the Ionian University (Corfu), admission score: 14,820 points, a decrease of 2,900 points.

School of Permanent Non-Commissioned Officers of the Navy (SMYN), admission score: 11,080, a decrease of 2,620 points.

Department of Philology at AUTh, admission score: 11,495 points, a decrease of 2,499 points.
