Ann Arbor Screens Diverse Film Slate: From psychological Thrillers to Classic Revivals

A compelling mix of new releases and beloved classics are hitting local screens this week and beyond,offering Ann Arbor audiences a diverse range of cinematic experiences. From the chilling depths of a psychological thriller to the nostalgic charm of iconic films, local theaters are catering to a wide spectrum of tastes.

New Releases kick Off the Week

Killers,” a psychological thriller, opens at the Multiplex. the film, which debuted at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, delves into the psychological turmoil of a socially awkward adolescent navigating the competitive world of water polo camp. Starring Joel Edgerton, the film is directed by Charlie Polinger.

Simultaneously, “Peter Hujar’s Day” will premiere at the State. this documentary, a standout from the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, offers a glimpse into the New York art scene of 1974 through a conversation between photographer Peter Hujar and Linda Rosenkrantz. Directed by Ira Sachs, the film features performances by Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall.

Downtown Theaters Offer Special Screenings and Revivals

Downtown Ann Arbor’s theaters are enriching the cinematic landscape with special screenings and revival series. Today, The michigan Theater is hosting showings of two beloved films. At 1:30 PM, audiences can revisit the timeless classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland. Later, at 4:30 PM, fans can catch “Stranger Things 5: The Finale,” set in the fall of 1987, as Hawkins faces the aftermath of the Rifts and the heroes unite for a final confrontation with Vecna.

The Michigan continues its offerings with a Late Night Classics series. Tonight, at 8 PM, John belushi and Dan Aykroyd star in “The Blues Brothers,” a comedic adventure fueled by legendary blues, soul, and R&B artists like Aretha Franklin and James Brown.On Friday, January 2nd, at 9:30 PM, “romy & Michele’s High School Reunion,” starring Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, will play as part of the series.

The Arthouse Revival Film Series at The Michigan will showcase Akira Kurosawa’sThrone of Blood” on Tuesday, January 6th, at 7 PM. This adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” starring Toshirô mifune,promises a visually stunning and dramatically compelling experience.

Continuing Films and International Acclaim

Several films continue to grace the screens downtown. “The Secret Agent,” set in 1977 Brazil, has garnered important international recognition.The film premiered at Cannes and has been nominated for both the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Foreign Language Film,and has been selected as Brazil’s entry for the 2026 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

Rounding out the current offerings are “Marty Supreme,” starring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, and “Song Sung Blue,” featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. These films offer further diversity in genre and storytelling.
