2025 Mountain West Championship: Teams & Host Announcement

by Mark Thompson

Mountain West Football Championship Participants to be Determined by Metrics

The final teams competing for the Mountain West Football Championship title will be decided by a complex formula of computer rankings and announced on the morning of Sunday, November 30th. This unconventional approach comes as Boise State, New Mexico, and San Diego State all concluded conference play with identical 6-2 records.

A Four-Way Tie Possibility

The equation could become even more intricate if UNLV secures a victory over Nevada on Saturday, creating a four-way tie for the top spot in the Mountain West. According to a conference statement, the selection process prioritizes a composite average of four key metrics: Connelly SP+, ESPN SOR, KPI, and SportSource rankings.

Tiebreaker Protocols Explained

Once the two championship participants are identified, a head-to-head comparison will determine which team hosts the game. However, if the potential host teams did not face each other during the regular season, the decision will revert back to the aforementioned computer metrics.

Scenarios and Outcomes

If the tie remains among Boise State, New Mexico, and San Diego State, the teams’ 1-1 records against each other will not be sufficient to break the deadlock. In this scenario, the computer metrics will definitively determine the top two teams advancing to the championship game. A subsequent two-team tiebreaker will then be used to establish the host team.

Should UNLV join the group, the situation becomes more complex. Because all four teams did not compete against one another, the computer metrics will again be the deciding factor for selecting the two championship contenders. The resulting top two teams will then engage in a two-team tiebreaker to determine hosting rights.
