Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi Challenge Samsung’s Camera Dominance in New Flagship Tests
A new round of camera testing reveals a shifting landscape in smartphone photography, with flagship smartphones from Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi delivering impressive results that challenge Samsung’s long-held lead. While Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra maintains a high level of detail, recent tests indicate its performance falls short in key areas compared to its Chinese competitors.
Recent camera tests show Vivo’s latest flagship model achieving “excellent sharpness and very good dynamic range,” though testers noted that colors can sometimes appear overly saturated. The Oppo Find X8 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra also garnered praise for their daylight photography capabilities, although the Xiaomi device was observed to occasionally overexpose images.
Sharpness and Detail: A Clear Distinction
The tests demonstrate a consistently high level of detail across all devices. However, when it comes to pure sharpness, the flagship offerings from Oppo and Vivo are emerging as frontrunners. “In terms of sharpness, the flagship smartphones from Oppo and Vivo perform the best,” according to the testing results. Furthermore, analysis of photos featuring indoor scenes – specifically, “house photos” – revealed that Samsung’s HDR processing doesn’t quite measure up to Vivo’s capabilities.
Portrait Mode: Where Chinese Manufacturers Shine
The differences between the phones become even more pronounced when evaluating portrait mode performance. Testers found that the Chinese manufacturers excel at isolating fine details, such as the individual strands of a kitten’s fur, creating a natural separation between the subject and the background. This effect, however, was not replicated by the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which produced images that appeared “very unnatural” in portrait mode. This wasn’t an isolated incident; repeated tests confirmed the consistency of this result for the Galaxy phone.
The results suggest a growing sophistication in the camera technology developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturers, potentially signaling a shift in the competitive dynamics of the high-end smartphone market. While Samsung remains a strong contender, these tests indicate that consumers seeking the absolute best in smartphone photography should carefully consider the offerings from Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi.
