Rai Holds Slim Lead at Abu Dhabi Championship as Fleetwood Looms
A thrilling finish is anticipated at the Abu Dhabi Championship as Aaron Rai clings to a one-stroke advantage heading into Sunday’s final round. The Englishman is seeking his first title on the European tour in five years, and a victory would be a significant milestone in the 2025 season.
Rai carded a remarkable 6-under 66 on Saturday at Yas Links, bringing his tournament total to 20-under par. This performance positions him narrowly ahead of a formidable chasing pack, including seasoned veterans and rising stars.
Chasing the Leader
Nicolai Hojgaard and Tommy Fleetwood share second place, just one stroke behind Rai. Fleetwood, a past champion at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club – having won the event in both 2017 and 2018 – presents a particularly strong challenge. Nacho Elvira sits a further shot back, also remaining within striking distance.
The leaderboard also features No. 2-ranked Rory McIlroy, the current leader in the season-long Race to Dubai standings. McIlroy made a strong push early in his round, securing six birdies in his first 11 holes. However, his momentum faltered as the wind increased, resulting in a 66 and leaving him six strokes off the lead at 14-under par.
Rai’s Recent Form and Championship Ambitions
Rai’s recent success extends beyond the European tour. He secured a victory at the Scottish Open in 2020 and added a PGA Tour win at the Wyndham Championship in August of last year. “This is one of the biggest events we have on the DP World Tour,” Rai stated. “To win this week, to have a chance going into the weekend, is great. Still a long way to go and a lot of really good players.”
His third round was characterized by a hot start, with five birdies on his front nine, followed by additional gains on the 11th and 14th holes. A minor setback occurred at the 17th, where he three-putted for bogey, but he recovered to par the challenging par-5 18th.
Fleetwood’s Formidable Challenge
Many observers believe Tommy Fleetwood represents Rai’s most significant threat. Fleetwood’s recent achievements include winning the Tour Championship – his first PGA Tour title – and claiming the $10 million FedEx Cup prize. He also enjoyed success at the India Championship and played a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black.
“I’m playing very good golf at the moment and I’ve found myself in this position a lot throughout the summer, but never take it for granted,” Fleetwood said. “This is what we practice for. These are the times of our lives, and I’m enjoying it very much.”
Fleetwood was quick to acknowledge Rai’s exceptional performance. “He played phenomenally well,” Fleetwood commented. “He was unbelievable today in every department.”
The final round promises a captivating showdown as Rai attempts to secure his first European tour title in five years, while Fleetwood and others will be determined to capitalize on any potential slip-ups. The Abu Dhabi Championship is poised for a dramatic conclusion.
