Australia Drawn into Challenging 2026 World Cup Group with USA, Paraguay, and European Playoff Winner

Australia will face a formidable challenge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having been drawn into Group D alongside co-hosts the United States, Paraguay, and the winner of a European playoff. The draw, conducted after a lengthy ceremony at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC on Saturday, sets the stage for a potentially thrilling campaign for Tony Popovic’s side.

The Socceroos will learn the identity of their European opponent in March, following a playoff series involving Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, and Kosovo. The semi-final matchups will see Turkey face Romania, and Slovakia take on Kosovo on March 26th. The winners will then compete for the final spot in the group on March 31st. Australia has never previously faced Kosovo in an international contest, having only played friendlies against the other potential European adversaries – most recently a 3-2 loss to Romania in 2013.

A recent friendly encounter with the United States, just two months prior to the draw, offers a preview of what’s to come. Though Jordan Bos opened the scoring for Australia in that contest held in Denver, Colorado, the Americans ultimately prevailed 2-1 with goals from Haji Wright. The match was notably physical, with US star Christian Pulisic sustaining an injury following a challenge from Jason Geria. Following the game, a US defender reportedly stated, “They’re lucky it was a friendly. I was ready to go. And if [the referee] didn’t give me a shit yellow in the corner, I probably would’ve killed somebody.”

Popovic anticipates a similarly intense atmosphere when the teams meet again next year. “The game was played in a very competitive spirit,” he said. “There was nothing friendly, really, about the match. We played well in the match, and we get to do it again, and this time, with a lot more at stake, at a World Cup against a host nation. So it’s quite special, and I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic match.”

The American side has already downplayed the challenge posed by Australia, with some analyses labeling the Socceroos a “lay up” opponent. Popovic acknowledged these comments, stating, “I’m sure every Australian would disagree with that, and so we should, but I’m not surprised by those comments. If you’re the US and you look at the draw, you’re the host nation, you’re playing at home, and you want to fancy yourself to be able to get through. But that shouldn’t stop us from believing [we can] get through the group as well. We’ll go into it with a lot of optimism and confidence; I’m sure the boys are looking at the draw and can’t wait to get over there.” He emphasized the need for improvement, adding, “[We] know that every part of our game will have to go to another level, which is also exciting. And I think anyone that underestimates us will get a rude shock when it comes to those group games.”

Australia boasts a strong historical record against Paraguay, remaining undefeated in their five previous encounters with two wins and three draws. However, their upcoming match will mark the first competitive fixture between the two nations. A 1-0 victory in Sydney in 2010, secured by a goal from David Carney, represents their most recent meeting. Notably, current coach Popovic featured in a 1-1 draw against Paraguay in 2006, scoring his eighth international goal.

While the group stage opponents and match dates have been confirmed, FIFA will reveal the venues and kick-off times in a separate broadcast on Sunday. In other draw results, New Zealand will compete in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and Iran, while England will face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in Group L.
