The 2027 Seoul World Youth Day (WYD) Regional Organizing Committee (Chairman: Archbishop of Seoul Chung Soon-taek), the Apostolic Nunciature to Korea, and the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life held the launch ceremony of the ‘2027 Seoul WYD’ at Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 28th. WYD is an event hosted by the Catholic Church for young people around the world, transcending nationality, race, language, and religion. Established by Pope John Paul II, the first event was held in Rome in 1986, and has been held in various countries around the world every two to three years since. Seoul was selected as the next host city for the 37th World Youth Day held in Lisbon, Portugal last year.
The inauguration ceremony on this day was a place to inform the people and all believers that the activities for Seoul WYD, which will be three years away, have begun in earnest. The event, which was held in the order of the entrance of the flag bearers from 194 countries, the inauguration declaration, congratulatory remarks, and the inauguration mass, was attended by Archbishop Giovanni Gasparri, the Apostolic Nuncio to Korea, Gleison de Paula Sousa, the Undersecretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, as well as diplomats from eight countries including Austria, Mexico, and the Philippines, domestic political figures, and approximately 900 domestic youth and adolescents.
Archbishop Jeong Sun-taek said at the event, “We hope to experience the miracle of one person changing and our community changing through the upcoming preparation process and Seoul WYD,” and added, “I ask that young people actively participate as the main actors in creating this miracle.”
The Seoul WYD, scheduled to be held in late July to early August 2027, will be divided into a 5-day diocesan conference (preliminary event) held in dioceses across the country except for Seoul, and a 6-day main conference held in Seoul. The main conference will begin with an opening mass, followed by catechetical education by bishops from each country, a sanctuary fair, an all-night prayer vigil with the Pope, and the announcement of the next host country. The theme scripture representing the conference will be announced by Pope Francis himself at the Vatican in September. The theme scripture of last year’s Lisbon World Youth Day was ‘Mary arose and went in haste.’ In November, the wooden cross and holy fire, which are symbols of the WYD, will be handed over.
Meanwhile, the economic ripple effects of Seoul WYD, which is expected to be attended by 500,000 to 700,000 people, were also announced at the inauguration ceremony on that day. According to an analysis by KDI School of Public Policy and Management, Seoul WYD’s production inducement effect is estimated at 11.36 trillion won, its added value inducement effect is estimated at 1.59 trillion won, and its employment inducement effect is estimated at 24,700 people.
