The 2027 Seoul World Youth Day (WYD) Regional Organizing Committee (Chairman: Archbishop of Seoul Chung Soon-taek), the Apostolic Nunciature to Korea, and the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Laity, Family, and Life held the launch ceremony of the ‘2027 Seoul WYD’ at Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 28th. Established by Pope John Paul II, the first event was held in Rome in 1986, and has been held in various countries around the world every two to three years since. Seoul was selected as the next host city for the 37th World Youth Day held in Lisbon, Portugal last year.

The inauguration ceremony on this day was a place to inform the people and all believers that the activities for Seoul WYD, which will be three years away, have begun in earnest. The event, which was held in the order of the entrance of the flag bearers from 194 countries, the inauguration declaration, congratulatory remarks, and the inauguration mass, was attended by Archbishop Giovanni Gasparri, the Apostolic Nuncio to Korea, Gleison de Paula Sousa, the Undersecretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, as well as diplomats from eight countries including Austria, Mexico, and the Philippines, domestic political figures, and approximately 900 domestic youth and adolescents.
