20th African Boxing Championships: DRC ranks second, with 15 medals

YAOUNDE – At the end of this 20th edition of mixed boxing held from July 28 to August 5, 2023 at the Palais polyvalent des sports, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is positioned on the podium, second after Morocco, with 15 medals (05 in gold , 06 in silver and 04 in bronze). The host country is in 4th place.

The lanterns went out on this African competition during which 264 boxers from 25 countries competed, making the continent proud.

With 21 boxers lined up, the DRC snatch a total of 15 medals. Of the 05 gold metals, 03 were won for men and 02 for ladies.

Boniface Zengala (-67kg) defeated Marime Bernardo (Mozambique); Steve Kulenguluka (-71kg) and Pita Kabeji (-80kg) dominated Muxanga Tiago (Mozambique) and Ngamisengue Anauel (Congo B) respectively.

Among the women, Marcelat Sakobi (-57kg) won over Khouloud Hlimi (Tunisia) and Jorbelle Malewu (+81kg) over Onguene Tsimi (Cameroon).

In the silver category, the Congolese medalists are: Frezier Mujinga (-51kg), David Tshama (-75kg), Nathan Mbeli (-86kg) for men. Among the ladies: Merveille Mbalayi (-60kg), Marie Joëlle Mwika (-81kg) and Gisèle Nyembo (-48kg).

In the bronze category, there is Tulembeka Zola (-48kg), Idriss Kitangila (-60kg) and William Mbangi (-92kg) (for men). Among the ladies: Brigitte Mbambi (-70kg).

It should be noted that according to introduced sources, the winners of the gold medal pocketed 15,000 USD, 5000 USD for the silver medal and 2500 USD for the bronze one.
