The Embassy of Burundi invites the Burundian community to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Ndadaye Melchior.

Brussels (Belgium), 10/16/2024 – In connection with the history of Burundi, the highly appreciated Ambassador of Burundi to Belgium, HE Ntahiraja Thérence, surrounded by his dedicated teaminvites Monday October 21, 2024, in Brussels, the entire Burundian community as well as their friends to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Ndadaye Melchior, a hero of democracy in Burundi.

On October 21, 1993, Ndadaye Melchior, newly elected President of Burundi, was assassinated along with several members of his government and parliamentarians.. This marked the start of the civil war in Burundi, which was to last until 2003. At that time, the United States was seeking to establish its influence in Africa, as part of the building of an American empire in the world or a neoliberal American unipolar globalization (GUAN)often to the detriment of European interests inherited from the colonial period. The democracy promoted by France, notably through President Mitterrand’s La Baule speech in June 1990, was not well received by the Americans. They favored a Republic of Burundi under a military dictatorship rather than a democratic Republic. It was another example illustrating the continuity of aggression against the Burundian people, in a context of colonization and neocolonialism, against Burundi, an ancient African thousand-year-old state known as Ingoma y’Uburundi.
