22 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested; Pity the loss of the boats

Rameswaram: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 22 Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly fishing across the border.

The fishermen, who were fishing near Kachchativu, are said to be from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Nine of them were reportedly arrested at midnight.

Initial reports said that the Sri Lankan navy had also seized a keyboard. Meanwhile, media reports said that the Sri Lankan navy arrested 13 more Tamil fishermen who were fishing in other boats near Kachchativu yesterday morning and confiscated their boats.

A Sri Lankan court has remanded all 22 in custody until March 10.

There have been a series of incidents where Tamil Nadu fishermen have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for entering their territory and fishing.

The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to urge the Government of India to assist in finding a permanent solution to this problem.
