220 migrants rescued off the coast of Zuwara

The Libyan Coast Guard General Administration was able to rescue and arrest 220 illegal immigrants of different nationalities at sea off the coast of Zuwara.

The administration said in a statement: “Among the migrants were women and children of different nationalities, who were on board a dilapidated boat in the territorial waters off the coast of Zuwara.”

The statement added that “after they were rescued, they were disembarked at the Shaab Port point affiliated with the Coast Guard, Tripoli branch, before being handed over to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency to take the necessary legal measures.”

Last July, the Libyan Coast Guard General Administration announced the “rescue of 71 illegal immigrants of African nationalities on the coasts of eastern Tripoli.”

Libya, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, is a transit point for many irregular migrants to Europe. The southern border witnessed the death of 50 illegal migrants from different African countries, on a journey across the desert on the border between Niger and Libya. Libya announced the deportation of ten thousand and 69 irregular migrants in 2023 in coordination with the International Organization for Migration.
