On the 11th, marking the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks in 2001, memorial ceremonies were held in New York and other locations as customary.

The night before, at a fiery debate in Philadelphia, Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate former President Donald Trump attended the memorial ceremony in New York. They shook hands in front of prominent figures in the political arena, including President Joe Biden.

Candidate Trump attended alongside Republican vice presidential candidate Senator J.D. Vance. Behind them were Trump’s sons.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota participated in the memorial ceremony held in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Candidate Harris, along with President Biden, participated in memorials in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. Trump also visited Shanksville and toured a New York City firehouse that lost many firefighters who rushed to the scene of the attacks 23 years ago, alongside candidate Vance.

In the September 11, 2001 attacks, a group of Islamic militants from Al-Qaeda hijacked four American passenger planes. Two of these planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, and one into the western side of the Pentagon in suburban Washington, D.C.

The remaining plane was believed to be heading towards either the U.S. Capitol or the White House, but passengers resisted the hijackers, and it crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in this attack, excluding the 19 hijackers. It was the deadliest attack on American soil since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Furthermore, this attack triggered America’s “War on Terror” and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
