Watan Al-Youm: A spokesman for the Ministry of Labor, Muhammad Al-Zyoud, said, on Sunday, that Article 78 of the Labor Law stipulates that children under 16 years of age shall not be employed.
He added that the law provides for a violation of the employer by a fine of not less than 300 dinars and not more than 500 dinars in the event that he has children working under the legal age, and it is not reduced by the court’s decision.
Al-Zyoud confirmed that 231 child labor cases have been seized since the beginning of this year, in addition to the ministry’s cadres carrying out about 7087 inspection campaigns on institutions and shops to follow up on the presence or absence of child labor.
He pointed out that there is an electronic platform through which anyone can report any case of child labor, and the Ministry is working to follow up on these complaints in coordination with the Ministry of Education.

High rates of poverty and unemployment
For his part, Ahmed Awad, director of the Phoenix Center for Economic Studies, said that child labor numbers have increased dramatically over the past few years, due to the difficult living conditions that the Jordanian family suffers from.
He pointed out that the government bears part of the responsibility and their families as well, especially since Jordan has witnessed during the past years a rise in poverty and unemployment rates, in addition to a decline in the education system.
He explained that the Corona pandemic and the shift to distance learning led, in one way or another, to an increase in child labor cases during the past years.
Awad pointed to depriving the child of his right to education and depriving him of vocational education that allows the child to work and engage in the labor market under certain conditions.
