2,400 MW of Solar Power: Metro Rail Corporation Project

CHENNAI: The Metro Rail Corporation plans to generate 2,400 MW of electricity annually by installing solar power systems.

While completing the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project, the officials of the company have decided to install solar power devices on the elevated track, metro stations and workshops.

They said that the planned target can be achieved through this.

“Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has been encouraging the solar power project since its inception on the basis of reducing carbon emissions, preserving greenery and obtaining safe electrical energy.

“In this regard, the Metro Rail Corporation has installed rooftop solar power systems in various areas in the first phase of the Metro Rail project,” the officials said.

Officials have also said that solar panels are installed to generate 6.56 megawatts of solar power in places connected to the metro rail.

Pointing out that electricity alone accounts for 40 per cent of Metro Rail’s expenses, its officials said that solar power will save Rs 2 crore in electricity bills every year.
