/ 25 people were killed and three were seriously injured, on Tuesday, as a result of a fire that broke out in the basement of a 16-story residential building in the Girtepe district of Istanbul.

The city governor’s office said in a statement that although the fire was extinguished thanks to the intervention of firefighters, 25 people were killed in the incident. Three people were admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said, in a statement from the scene of the accident, that the fire had been extinguished, noting that workers who were carrying out renovation work at the site lost their lives.

In turn, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who immediately moved to the fire site, said that investigations began immediately to find out the causes of the fire.

Imamoglu added that the site of the fire was undergoing renovation work and the materials used in these works helped in expanding the scope of the fire, noting that the fire was controlled and the building was evacuated.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a telephone call to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya and received information from him about the fire that broke out at around 1:00 local time (GMT+3) during renovation work in the nightclub located on the first and second floors of the 16-storey building, which was Closed in a month
